Dumpster Weight Calculator: Will Your Debris Fit Under 2 Tons?
Enter what you're throwing away — shingle squares, drywall sheets, wood scrap, furniture, concrete — and this calculator estimates the total weight in tons and how much of a 16-yard roll-off it fills. Every HomeHaven rental includes 2 tons of disposal ($300 for 1 day, $375 for 3 days, $415 for 7 days), so anything under the line costs you nothing extra.

Dumpster weight questions, answered
How much does a square of shingles weigh?
A square of asphalt shingles covers 100 square feet and weighs roughly 250 pounds for standard 3-tab, or 300 pounds for heavier architectural shingles. At 250 pounds per square, the 2 tons (4,000 lb) included in a HomeHaven rental covers about 16 squares of single-layer tear-off — call 903-449-2818 for bigger or multi-layer roofs and we'll plan the pulls.
How much weight does a 16-yard dumpster hold?
Our 16-yard roll-off includes 2 tons (4,000 pounds) of disposal in the flat rate. The box itself can safely carry more for dense material, but anything over 2 tons is billed at the landfill's per-ton rate with no markup, so the calculator on this page is worth running before you load.
What happens if I go over 2 tons?
Nothing gets refused. The overage is billed at the exact per-ton rate the scale house charges us, passed through with no markup. If the calculator shows you close to the line, call 903-449-2818 and we'll plan a second pull instead — that's usually cheaper than one heavy load.
How accurate is this dumpster weight calculator?
It uses industry-standard average weights per unit (250 lb per shingle square, 55 lb per drywall sheet, 400 lb per cubic yard of wood scrap, 2,200 lb per cubic yard of dirt). Wet material, plaster instead of drywall, or heavier architectural shingles can push actual weight 10–20% higher, so treat the result as a planning estimate.
Can I put concrete, brick, or dirt in a dumpster?
In small amounts, yes. Concrete and dirt hit the weight limit long before they fill the box — one cubic yard of dirt is already more than a ton. For clean concrete or dirt loads we set a fill line on the bin and price it per load, so call 903-449-2818 first.
What size dumpster do I need for my job?
For nearly every North Texas home project — a roof tear-off, kitchen remodel, garage or estate cleanout — a 16-yard roll-off is the right size at $300 for 1 day, $375 for 3 days, or $415 for 7 days. Our dumpster size guide compares 10, 16, 20 and 30-yard options side by side.
