15 yard vs 16 yard dumpster: which one do you actually need?

A 15-yard and a 16-yard roll-off dumpster take up virtually the same driveway space — both are roughly 15 to 16 feet long, 7 to 8 feet wide, and about 4 feet tall. The difference is one cubic yard of volume, roughly one extra pickup-truck load of debris. Because the footprint is the same, a 16-yard bin is the better default: it costs about the same to rent, fits the same driveway, and reduces the chance you need a second pull. HomeHaven Dumpsters rents 16-yard roll-offs in North Texas for $300 flat (1 day), $375 (3 days), or $415 (7 days), with 2 tons of disposal included.

15-yard figures are typical industry dimensions and vary by hauler; 16-yard figures are our own bins.

When 15 yards is enough

  • • A single room's worth of furniture and boxes
  • • A small bathroom gut with no tile removal
  • • Yard cleanup with brush and limbs only
  • • A light shed teardown

When you want the extra yard

  • • Full garage or storage-unit cleanout (bulky, awkward items waste space)
  • • Roof tear-off of 20+ squares
  • • Kitchen remodel with cabinets — cabinet boxes eat volume fast
  • • Estate cleanout of a 2–3 bedroom house
  • • Fencing, decking, or playset demo with long boards

The real cost difference is the second pull

Renting a slightly smaller bin saves maybe $20–$40 up front. If you fill it and need another one, you pay a whole second rental — usually $250 or more, plus another wait for the truck. That is why we standardized on one 16-yard size instead of selling you a smaller bin twice.

If your project is genuinely small, book the 1-day residential window at $300 — same bin, shorter rental, lowest price.

Weight limits matter more than yardage

Volume runs out on cleanouts; weight runs out on shingles, concrete, dirt, and plaster. Ours includes 2 tons, and overages bill at the landfill rate with no markup. Ask any hauler what their included tonnage is before comparing yardage — a 15-yard bin with a 1-ton cap is the more expensive rental on a roof job.

See flat-rate pricing and the dumpster size guide for load math by project type.
