How to Get Rid of Old Furniture and Mattresses in North Texas

Old furniture is awkward to get rid of. It's too big for your trash cart, too heavy for one person, and most charities won't take it once it's stained or sagging. Mattresses are worse — many landfills charge a special per-mattress fee, and no thrift store in North Texas will accept a used one.

Here's every real option, from free to fastest.

Option 1: Donate it (free, if it qualifies) Donation works only for furniture that's genuinely resellable — no rips, stains, pet damage, smoke smell, or wobbly frames. Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations and local thrift shops around Bonham, Sherman, and Paris will often pick up larger pieces, but expect a 1–3 week scheduling window and a firm inspection at the curb.

**They will almost never take:** used mattresses, box springs, particle-board furniture, sleeper sofas, or anything with visible water damage.

Option 2: List it free locally (free, but slow) Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist "free — curb alert" posts move decent furniture fast in small North Texas towns. The risk is the no-show: you plan around a pickup that never happens, and the couch sits on your porch for another week.

Option 3: City bulk pickup (free, but tightly capped) Most cities in Fannin, Lamar, Grayson, and Hunt counties offer bulk or "brush and bulky" collection on a set schedule, typically limited to one or two items per pickup and excluding mattresses in some jurisdictions. Great for a single recliner. Not an option for a house.

Option 4: Haul it to the landfill yourself If you own a truck, you can take furniture to a transfer station and pay by weight, plus a separate mattress fee at many sites. Add fuel, the gate fee, straps, a second person for the lifting, and two or three round trips — and it stops feeling cheap.
