Shingle weight calculator: roof squares to tons
Multiply your roof squares by the weight per square: about 250 lb per square for 3-tab asphalt shingles and about 300 lb per square for architectural (dimensional) shingles. Multiply again by the number of layers you are tearing off, then divide by 2,000 to get tons. Example: 25 squares of architectural shingles in one layer = 25 x 300 = 7,500 lb, or 3.75 tons. A HomeHaven 16-yard dumpster includes 2 tons, which covers roughly 16 squares of 3-tab or 13 squares of architectural shingles; heavier roofs are billed at the landfill rate with no markup.
- 3-tab asphalt: ~250 lb per square (100 sq ft)
- Architectural / dimensional: ~300 lb per square
- Wood shake: ~350 lb per square · Slate or tile: 700–1,200 lb per square
- Multiply by the number of layers — a second layer doubles the weight
- Add ~45 lb per 4x8 sheet if you're replacing decking

| 15 squares | 3,750 lb (1.88 t) | 4,500 lb (2.25 t) |
| 20 squares | 5,000 lb (2.50 t) | 6,000 lb (3.00 t) |
| 25 squares | 6,250 lb (3.13 t) | 7,500 lb (3.75 t) |
| 30 squares | 7,500 lb (3.75 t) | 9,000 lb (4.50 t) |

How many squares fit in a 16-yard dumpster?
Volume is rarely the limit on a tear-off — weight is. A 16-yard box physically holds 30+ squares of shingles, but the included 2 tons covers about:
- • 16 squares of single-layer 3-tab
- • 13 squares of single-layer architectural
- • 8 squares of double-layer 3-tab
Bigger roofs still work fine — we either bill the overage tonnage at landfill cost or schedule a staged swap (haul full, set empty on the same trip) so the crew never stops. Call 903-449-2818 and we'll plan the pulls before day one.
Measuring squares if you don't have the roofer's estimate
- • One square = 100 sq ft of roof surface
- • Measure the footprint (length x width per section), then add for pitch
- • Low slope (4/12): add ~5% · Medium (6/12): ~12% · Steep (10/12): ~30%
- • Divide total roof sq ft by 100 for squares, then round up one
- • Add 1–2 squares for ridge caps, valleys, and starter
